Cathy ZHU has been the Deputy Executive Director of the Documentary Center of SMG since 2020, one of the largest media and cultural conglomerates in China. She is in charge of documentary production and international new media operation at the Center.


She was the Deputy Executive Director of ICS from 2015 to 2019. ICS is the largest local English language TV channel based in Shanghai. She is one of the founders of this channel.


Since she entered SMG in 1993, Ms. Zhu has worked as a journalist, a documentary maker, a series director and an executive producer. Her documentary works have won more than 60 prestigious TV awards, both at home and abroad, including an Emmy Award, four Telly Awards, three Asia TV Awards, a Bronze Hawk Award and three first-prize China News Awards.

Her representative works include: China’s Challenges, The Tokyo Trials, Witness a New Dawn, Our Changing Homeland and No.20 Weihai Road. Her documentary films have been aired not only in China, but on PBS in the US, ABC in Australia and other main stream TV stations in Europe and Southeast Asia.Ms. Zhu is a juror of Asia TV Festival , Prix Italia and Magnolia Award of Shanghai TV Festival,China National State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. She is a member of China’s National Television Artists Association and a council member of the Shanghai Television Artists Association.Ms. Zhu holds a master degree in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she was sponsored by the British government as a Chevening scholar from 2004 to 2005. She graduated from Fudan University in 1993 after she finished her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
