The film records linearly the working holiday life of the young group firstly from their working life then to their experience in travel and exchange work for accommodation . When the People' s Republic of China was founded on October 1st,1949, Magnum had only been established for less than two years , but Magnum' s relationship with China can be traced back 10 years earlier . As early as 1938, Robert Kappa , one of the founders of Magnum , went to Wuhan , Xuzhou , Zhengzhou , Guangzhou , and other places in China . In the course of eight months , he photographed historical moments of the Chinese Anti - Japanese War and the living conditions of the Chinese people at that time . Another founder of Magnum , Cartier Bresson , flew to Peking , Shanghai , Nanjing , and Hangzhou from the end of 1948 to the beginning of 1949.
